What is HealthPathways WA?

HealthPathways WA is a secure web-based portal with information on patient assessment, management and referral pathways to assist clinicians in navigating patients through the complex primary, community and acute health care system in Western Australia. The pathways are developed by General Practitioners (GPs) to be used during consultation but can also be utilised by other health professionals. The content published is developed based off WA guidelines and includes health concerns particularly prevalent among the population of WA.

For more details about the HealthPathways program, pathway development and review processes, please see the HealthPathways WA Overview Document.

Project Plan

The HealthPathways WA leadership team completes an annual review of the HealthPathways program to inform the workplan and identify priorities for the following year. It is important that the work undertaken aligns closely with what will best support those in general practice. The planning process considers:

  • Data showing pathway views and popular search terms
  • Clinical risk mitigation (e.g. when there have been major changes to care/guidelines)
  • The review cycle
  • Public health priorities (e.g. Monkeypox, COVID-19)
  • Internal and external stakeholder feedback
  • WAPHA and WA Department of Health identified priorities/ focus areas
  • Contractual requirements

The resulting workplan outlines which pathways/streams (groups of pathways) will be reviewed or localised (developed) by the team for that year and the order in which work will be undertaken. The workplan acknowledges the complexity and level of consultation required for each pathway and hence work timeframes can vary significantly. Additional/new priorities are evaluated case by case to determine whether to they require urgent progression or can be held until the next planning cycle.

The 2023 workplan will see work undertaken within the following streams:

  • Assault and Abuse
  • Cardiology
  • Child Health (including Child Mental Health)
  • Diabetes
  • Endocrinology
  • Ear, Nose & Throat
  • Gastroenterology
  • General Surgery
  • Gynaecology
  • Haematology
  • Immunology
  • Mental Health
  • Neurology
  • Older Person’s Health
  • Palliative Care
  • Pregnancy
  • Respiratory
  • Sexual Health
  • Urology

NB. This list is not all-inclusive. Team members will commence work on an assigned pathway/s within the streams (not the entire stream) as prioritised. Should you require more information about the specific pathways in the workplan for a particular stream, please contact the team at health.pathways@wapha.org.au
